How Spotify monetized music when it was already available for free?

They focused on a very simple aspect, which was missing in the music browsing market.

🚀 Speed

🎧 Music was accessible for free on 1,000s of websites, but the loading time was more than 2 seconds!
🛠️ Spotify's engineering team led by Daniel tried solving it and ended up decreasing the loading time to 500ms after 2 years of development.

Still, it was a lot to grab user attention!

How did they solve this?

The human brain conceives anything that happens in less than 200ms as “instant”.
  • They created an illusion to get that "instant" magical effect by making the bar showing progress on the song start immediately upon play instead of showing a loading icon.
  • Downloading only the first 15 seconds from the internet and complementing the rest of the song using P2P sharing between Spotify users near you who have already loaded the song.

🏁 and voila! Users 💗 it.
